I don’t know what it is about Halloween, but it’s one of those holidays where you can really go all out with your decorating and somehow, it just works!
Want pumpkins covering the front steps? Do it.
Floating witch hats? Absolutely.
A giant skeleton hanging out on the lawn? Why not?
That’s what I love about decorating for Halloween. You can make your outdoor space spooky, cute, cozy or a fun mix of everything.
And if you love decorating your home for the seasons like I do, it’s so much fun carrying that festive feeling outside, too.
You can keep things simple with pumpkins, lanterns and mums around the front door, or completely transform your porch and yard with ghosts, bats, skeletons, spiderwebs and glowing lights.
Because when it comes to Halloween, sometimes more really is more!
So, grab those pumpkins and skeletons because I’ve rounded up some fun and festive Halloween outdoor decoration ideas to make your home ready for spooky season!
1. Giant Skeleton Yard Display
Put a huge skeleton in the front yard and build the rest of your decorations around him. You can even change his pose throughout October. The giant skeleton trend is still going strong this season.
2. Floating Witch Hat Porch
Hang black witch hats from clear fishing line so they look like they’re magically floating above your porch. Add little battery-operated lights inside some of them for nighttime.
3. Giant Spider Crawling Up the House
Attach one enormous fuzzy black spider to the side of the house and stretch a huge web across your porch or garage. Oversized spiders and webs continue to be a popular outdoor look.
4. Ghosts Floating From the Trees
Hang lightweight white ghosts at different heights from tree branches so they move when the wind blows. Make a whole little ghost family!
5. Skeletons Climbing the House
Pose several skeletons so it looks like they’re climbing your porch railing, gutters or the side of your house. Funny posed-skeleton scenes are especially popular this year.
6. Pumpkin Arch Around the Front Door
Create a HUGE arch overflowing with orange, white and black pumpkins around your doorway. Mix different pumpkin sizes so it feels really full.
7. Witch Coven in the Front Yard
Arrange three or five witches around a glowing cauldron with broomsticks, lanterns and purple lighting. Witch-cottage and coven-inspired outdoor displays are showing up in current Halloween inspiration.
8. DIY Chicken Wire Ghosts
Shape chicken wire into ghostly human figures and place them around the yard. At dusk, they practically disappear into the background and look SO creepy.
9. Glowing Ghost Pathway
Line the walkway with little glowing ghosts leading all the way to the front door.
10. Halloween Garage Door Bats
Cover your garage door with dozens of black 3D bats, starting with a small cluster and gradually spreading them across the door and exterior wall. Magnetic garage bats are also being highlighted as a 2026 outdoor decorating idea.
11. Skeleton Dinner Party
Set up an outdoor table with skeletons sitting around it having a very spooky dinner party. Use vintage dishes, black candles and cobwebs to make the scene even better.
12. Giant Glowing Pumpkin Yard
Scatter oversized glowing jack-o’-lanterns across the lawn instead of keeping all your pumpkins on the porch. Large inflatables and glowing pumpkins remain popular outdoor choices.
13. Haunted Graveyard
Turn part of the lawn into a mini cemetery with tombstones, skeleton hands coming out of the ground, crooked fencing and little lanterns.
14. Floating Candles on the Porch
Hang battery-operated taper candles with clear fishing line from the porch ceiling. Mix them with floating witch hats for an extra-magical look.
15. Monster Coming Out of the Ground
Use oversized hands, bones or monster pieces so it looks like something is crawling out of your front lawn.
16. Pumpkin-Lined Front Steps
Cover your stairs with pumpkins—orange, white, green, striped and heirloom varieties—and weave lanterns and mums between them.
17. Spooky Fog Walkway
Add a fog machine near the walkway with tombstones, glowing lights and skeletons so trick-or-treaters have to walk right through the mist. Fog, lighting and animatronics are being used together for more immersive outdoor scenes.
18. Giant Ghosts in the Front Yard
Make oversized white ghosts several feet tall and group three together. Give each one a slightly different shape so they look like they’re floating across the lawn.
19. Skeleton Pumpkin Patch
Create a cute pumpkin patch and put a skeleton right in the middle holding a pumpkin—or have several skeletons pretending to pick pumpkins.
20. Creepy Window Silhouettes
Add witches, ghosts, monsters or shadowy figures to your front windows and illuminate them from behind at night.
21. Witch Legs Sticking Out of a Planter
My children loved this Halloween decoration outdoors and would often help me set it up. Put striped witch legs upside down in a large porch planter so it looks like a witch crash-landed right into your mums.
22. Witch’s Potion Garden
Turn one corner of the porch into a witchy potion station with old bottles, cauldrons, dried herbs, pumpkins, broomsticks and handwritten potion labels.
23. White Pumpkin Porch Steps
Line both sides of your porch steps with white pumpkins in different shapes and sizes, letting them spill naturally from the bottom step all the way up to the front door. Mix in creamy mums, lanterns and a little greenery to break up all the white. For Halloween, tuck a few black bats or tiny black lanterns between the pumpkins for just enough spooky contrast without losing that pretty, elegant look..
