One thing I love doing in the summer is enjoy our tiny above-ground pool.
And every summer I end up planning a pool party.
I try to keep things fun and low-stress, especially if I’m the one hosting it.
You don’t need a fancy setup or a themed drink station to make it memorable, just some fun food, fun activities, and good company.
To be fair, you really don’t even need a huge pool.
I remember summers when we’d set up an inflatable pool and throw little parties for the twins and their friends. It was a blast!
And that’s why I try to keep up it as they get older (and sneak an adult-version pool party too).
So if you’re planning your own pool party this summer, don’t sweat!
Here are some super easy ideas for a fun and festive pool party:
Pool Party Decor

All you need to make things look fun are a few bright colors, maybe some lights, then you’re halfway there!
Even simple touches like beach balls and cheap banners from the dollarstore can turn your backyard into summer central.
Flip-Flop Welcome Sign
Grab a few bright flip-flops (the louder the color, the better) and hot glue them side-by-side onto a board, ribbon, or even a strip of cardboard.
Use a stencil or freehand a quick “Welcome” across the front with paint or a paint marker.
Prop it up near your front steps or hang it on the gate to greet your guests with beach-day energy.
Beach Ball Arch
Blow up a bunch of small beach balls using a balloon pump (dollar store ones work perfectly) and thread them through a balloon arch strip or strong fishing line.
You’ll want to alternate colors as you go to keep it fun and bright.
Set it up at the entrance, over the drink table, or anywhere you want that big first impression.
Sunglasses Banner
Grab a few cheap novelty sunglasses and some string or twine.
Loop the arms over the line or use mini clothespins to clip them on like bunting.
Stretch the banner between trees, along the fence, or over the food table to add a splash of color and instant party favor vibes.
Paper Umbrella Wreath
Take a foam wreath form and open up a bunch of those tiny paper drink umbrellas.
Stick them in one by one until the whole thing is covered like a tropical explosion.
Hang it on your front door, a fence post, or even the side of the shed for full-on pool party flair.
Watermelon Table Runner
Cut out big watermelon slice shapes from red and green felt or cardstock (just ovals with a green edge and a few black dots for seeds).
Lay them down the center of your table like a runner.
If you’ve got extras, scatter some around the snack zone for extra cuteness.
Pool Noodle Garland
Slice up a few pool noodles into thick rounds, like giant fruit loops.
Thread them onto string or rope, and mix in beads, paper cutouts, or whatever else feels festive.
Hang it along the deck railing, across the fence, or drape it in front of the food table for instant color.
Tissue Paper Hibiscus
Stack 3–4 sheets of tissue paper in bright colors and cut them into flower shapes with wavy edges.
Pinch the center and twist a green pipe cleaner around it to make a stem, then fluff the layers so it looks full and blooming.
Tape them to the fence, scatter them across tables, or glue them onto straws for an easy tropical upgrade.
Tissue Paper Pineapples
Buy a few yellow tissue honeycomb balls and open them up so they form that round pineapple shape.
Cut out leafy tops from green cardstock and tape or glue them to the top.
Cluster them near the drink station, string a few up, or scatter them around the table for a no-mess tropical vibe.
Pool Party Snacks

Nobody wants a heavy meal mid-swim, so pool party food can be simplified to finger foods that won’t melt in the sun.
Keep it easy to grab and clean up and you’ve got yourself a party-worthy spread your guests will love!
Lemon Meringue Pie Dip
Mix lemon pudding with whipped topping until it’s creamy, then swirl in crumbled graham crackers and a dollop of lemon curd.
Serve it in a pie dish with vanilla cookies or graham sticks for dipping.
It’s basically pie you don’t have to slice!
Fruit Skewers
Thread chunks of watermelon, kiwi, grapes, and strawberries onto wooden sticks.
I love these because there’s noo rules, just color and fun!
Line them up on a tray or stick them upright into half a watermelon for extra flair.
Handy to grab and no forks required.
Frozen Kool-Aid Grapes
Toss grapes in a packet of dry Kool-Aid mix (any flavor works) until they’re fully coated.
Freeze them on a tray for a few hours until firm.
They come out sweet and tangy and perfect for a pool party.
Teddy Graham Cupcakes
Frost cupcakes with blue or tan icing to make them look like water or sand.
Lay a piece of sour ribbon on top like a towel, then perch a Teddy Graham on it and stick in a mini paper umbrella.
Or you can shove the Teddy Grahams into Lifesaver gummies on blue icing.
These look too cute to eat but they’re delicious!
Hawaiian Sliders
Layer deli ham, pineapple rings, and provolone cheese on sweet rolls, then brush the tops with a little melted butter and pop them in the oven.
Serve them warm so the cheese gets all melty.
You can even add a swipe of BBQ sauce if you’re feeling bold.
Candy Coated Popcorn
Pop a big batch of plain popcorn and drizzle it with melted candy melts in fun colors.
Toss in sprinkles while it’s still warm and let it cool on parchment paper.
Scoop into cups or bags for easy snacking.
Watermelon Pizza
Slice a thick round of watermelon and cut it into wedges like a pizza.
Top each slice with a dollop of whipped cream or yogurt, then sprinkle on berries, coconut, or granola.
It’s refreshing and perfect for a hot day!
Pineapple Salsa
Chop fresh pineapple, red bell pepper, red onion, and cilantro, then toss with a squeeze of lime juice.
Add jalapeño if you want a little kick (I sometimes do!).
Serve with tortilla chips or spoon it over grilled chicken.
Homemade Popsicles
Mix juice with sliced fruit or blend it all together, then pour into molds and freeze until solid.
Use fun flavors like mango, strawberry lemonade, or even coconut milk with pineapple chunks.
Run the molds under warm water to pop them out easily.
Flip Flop Sandwiches
Slice sandwiches into a flip flop shape and cut thin strips of cheese or bell peppers for the sandal straps.
This is a super quick and easy idea because you can pretty much make whatever sandwich you want!
Stack them on a tray or cutting board so they look like a tiny shoe store for lunch.
Pool Party Drinks

When it comes to pool party drinks, two words: Cold and Colorful.
Whatever you can keep cool and fresh poolside is a winner!
Pineapple Punch
Mix pineapple juice with ginger ale and a splash of orange juice for a fizzy, tropical punch.
Add slices of orange and pineapple to float on top, and serve it cold over lots of ice.
Toss in a few maraschino cherries if you want it to look extra sunny.
Ocean Water
Pour Sprite into a clear pitcher, stir in a drop or two of blue food coloring, and a splash of coconut extract.
Add a few Swedish fish gummies for fun and chill until serving time.
It’s bright blue, bubbly, and perfect for beach-themed cups!
Jungle Juice
Combine equal parts fruit punch, orange juice, and pineapple juice, then add sliced citrus and berries for extra color.
Stir it all together in a big bowl and serve with ice.
The more fruit floating on top, the better.
Raspberry Lemonade
Make a batch of lemonade (store-bought or homemade) and muddle in a few fresh raspberries.
Let it sit in the fridge so the flavor really soaks in.
I like to leave in the fruit, but you can strain it out if you want.
Bahama Mamas
Mix equal parts orange juice, pineapple juice, and a splash of grenadine for that layered sunset look.
Pour it slowly over ice so the colors stay separated.
Add a cherry and an umbrella for full tropical effect.
Blue Lemonade Punch
Stir together lemonade and a few pumps of blue raspberry syrup until the color is bright and fun.
Serve it with lemon slices and lots of crushed ice.
If you’re using a dispenser, let some lemon slices float around for extra flair.
Pineapple Limeade Slush
Blend pineapple juice, limeade concentrate, and a tray of ice until it’s thick and slushy.
Pour it into cups right away and add a wedge of lime or pineapple on the rim.
It’s brain-freeze worthy, which is perfect for a hot day in the pool!
Watermelon Slushie
Blend chunks of seedless watermelon with ice and a squeeze of lime juice until smooth.
If it’s too thin, add a few frozen strawberries to thicken it up. S
erve with a straw and let it melt slowly in the sun.
Pool Party Games

Pool party games don’t have to be complicated to be fun.
Getting people laughting and moving is what counts.
And the best pool party games are the ones you throw together yourself!
Water Minute-to-Win-It Games
Set up fast-paced challenges using water balloons, cups, sponges, or buckets.
Basically anything that soaks, stacks, or splashes!
Use a timer and let everyone race to complete silly tasks like transferring water with a sponge or stacking wet cups with slippery hands.
Keep it light, loud, and full of laughs.
Flamingo Ring Toss
Stick a few yard flamingos into the grass and toss plastic rings to try and hook their necks.
Space them out for different difficulty levels and assign points based on distance.
If the wind picks up, just push them in deeper so they don’t fall over mid-toss.
Pool Noodle Tic-Tac-Toe
Cut pool noodles to form a big floating grid and use more noodles to create large O’s and X’s.
Let players wade in and take turns placing their pieces in the squares.
It floats around a bit, but that’s half the fun.
Water Gun Race
Stretch a piece of string across the pool and poke a hole in the bottom of two red Solo cups so they can slide along the line.
Players use water guns to blast the cups from one end to the other.
First cup to the opposite side wins.
Pool Ring Ring Toss
Stand pool noodles upright in the water by anchoring the bottom with water weights or partially submerging them in buckets.
Use pool rings or diving rings and take turns trying to toss them around the noodles.
Make a few different stations if you’ve got space and let kids keep score.
Pool Scrabble
Write letters on sponges on them using waterproof markers or paint pens.
Toss them all into the pool and have players swim around to collect letters and spell words on the deck.
Bonus points for summer-themed words or longest word built!
Quick Prep Tips to Make It Easier
Getting ready for a pool party doesn’t have to mean a full day of prep and panic-cleaning!
With a few smart shortcuts, you can pull it all together without sweating through your outfit before guests even arrive:
- Pre-slice fruit and snacks in the morning and cover with cling wrap in the fridge
- Use disposable trays or foil pans to keep cleanup simple
- Set up a sunscreen + towel station near the pool so people don’t keep running inside
- Pick one “wow” item (like the beach ball arch) and keep everything else low-key
- Throw all the trash bags, napkins, and party tools in a laundry basket so it’s easy to grab mid-party
The best parties feel effortless because they’re planned that way. With just a little prep up front and you’ll actually get to enjoy the fun too.
Soak Up the Pool Party Fun Without the Stress
Pool parties don’t need to be over-the-top to be unforgettable.
With a little prep and a laid-back vibe, you can pull off a fun, festive day that feels effortless.
The real win is everyone heading home a little sun-kissed and smiling.
So string up the lights, set out the towels, and let summer do the rest!
